Entropion is an ocular condition that causes your pup's eyelid to roll inward. When this happens, your dog's fur and their eyelashes rub against the eyeball, irritating it, and affecting their vision. Eye Entropion in Dogs
Entropion is primarily a genetic abnormality that causes a dog's eyelids to roll inward. This inward positioning means that your pup's fur and eyelashes rub against the surface of the eye often causing pain, conjunctivitis, eye infections, corneal ulcers, perforations, and in some cases the development of pigment on the cornea which interferes with your dog's vision.
Entropion Surgery in Dogs
If this condition is left untreated, it can cause severe scarring of the cornea. This can not only cause your dog ongoing discomfort but also may lead to blindness.
The Dog Entropion Surgery Procedure
Puppies will sometimes grow out of entropion and no treatment will be required. However, if the condition is causing discomfort, a procedure known as 'tacking' or temporary eyelid eversion can help to relieve symptoms in young dogs.
Medical treatments with antibiotic ointments can be prescribed to decrease damage to the cornea, but medications will not resolve the entropion itself. To correct the issue, surgery will be required.
The surgery is basically an eye lift for your dog. Your pup's surgeon will remove a section of the skin to stop the eyelid from rolling inward. In order to prevent the occurrence of overcorrection which can lead to the eyelid rolling outward, your dog may undergo two surgeries.
Dog Entropion Surgery: What to Expect During Recovery
Your vet will prescribe any medications that are needed for secondary conditions along with antibiotics at the time of the surgery.
Your dog will typically be able to return home on the same day as their procedure. In order to ensure the best possible recovery, your dog will be fitted with a cone to prevent them from pawing at their eye while it heals. You will bring your dog in for a check-up around two weeks after the surgery and we will remove any sutures at this time. Your dog will be healed and back to normal after about a month.
Is entropion eye surgery painful for dogs?
Generally, entropion surgery is only mildly uncomfortable for your dog and causes minimal pain. It will, however, help to relieve their discomfort in the longterm as once they heal, their eyes will no longer be irritated.
Can entropion return after surgery in dogs?
Once a dog has had entropion surgery they will not typically experience the same condition again. Shar Peis, however, are an exception to this and may experience a reoccurrence due to the breed’s excessive facial skin folds.
The Prognosis For Dogs After Entropion Surgery
The prognosis for dogs who have undergone entropion surgery is pretty good. They should be able to live a normal pain-free life once surgery and recovery from dog entropion surgery are complete.
